Product Description

As the flagship system of the KHT family, the silver KHT 9000 ACE combines KEF's latest performance enhancing innovation with an uncompromised technical specification to create a true audiophile quality 3D sound picture: incredibly spacious, intricately detailed and totally engrossing. The 165-millimeter (6.5-inch) Uni-Q driver array brings out the full emotional depth and texture of vocals, whether sung, shouted, spoken or whispered - hardly surprising, since it's exactly the same unit as you'll find on the high end Q and XQ series. On either side, a matching pair of long throw bass drivers with ultra-low distortion motors for low frequency response that's as lucid as it gutsy - and thanks to KEF's Acoustic Compliance Enhancement (ACE), what you actually hear is the level of bass extension that's only normally obtainable with much larger speakers.

KEF KHT9000 Cast Aluminum Speaker System (Silver) Review

I was looking for rear surround sound speakers to compliment my Martin Logans front (SL3)/center (Logos). I needed something that was clear and natural without a small sound. Originally I started looking at the smaller KEF speakers. I was guided to the KHT9000. These speakers are amazing for their size. They are heavy but very well made with a contemporary look. The machining and precision of the construction is second to none. As rear speakers they sounded good but never had a chance to show off their true capabilities. Now They are the front speakers to a Martin Logan Theater center. I was leery at first that because of their size, the sound would not match. But play the intro to Wild Things and you would think the swamp moved into your basement. These speakers have a great spatial presence and will rock when thrown more power. The main issue is mounting. They are heavy so I would put them into studs if possible. Plus the cable bracket is the most convoluted design I have ever seen. It is hard to describe but it will make your life more complicated than it has to be. The speaker slides into this bracket and only 16 gauge wire will slide into the mounting hole. Then the wires are screwed into the bracket and contact is made by spring loaded pins that contact copper traces. It could be easier. There are stands available but you can only mount the speakers sideways and not vertical as displayed in the literature. The stands are heavy aluminum so if you are into the metal look, the KHT9000 has you covered.

I have the KEF speakers mounted 6' above the ground about 6' apart with my plasma in the center. The center speaker is about 3' off the ground and slightly forward just under the display. The surrounds are about 3' off the ground on aluminum stands. With cement walls and a 8' open ceiling, the sound is pretty amazing. The Theater center keeps the voice clear and almost shockingly transparent. When the KEFs kick in the sound is truly live like you are there.

The speakers may seem bright to some but I find them to really transfer sounds that would sound dull or muddy in your average mini-satellite speakers. The sound is very accurate and will not tire your ears like many cheap speakers will. But I enjoy their sound and apparently so do many others. You never see KEF KHT9000 come up for sale. People who buy these speakers keep them. Overall they are a very well kept secret. The only downside after figuring out how to mount them is cost. For a 5.1 surround system you are at $6,000. Not many will spend that kind of money unless they are seriously into their sound.
