A-3 Integrated Amplifier Review

I just received a Qinpu A3 from someone who purchased it new last month and decided he wanted to move on to something else. I had been researching this product for a while, but found very few reviews other than those here, the oft-repeated one from AudioAdvisor and a couple of other reviews posted on audio forums. And I'm not aware of any places in Austin to hear this particular unit. So I thought I'd give my thoughts. First, the first words from my mouth on listening to it were "Oh, wow!"

In my current case, I'm using it in a home office with iMac connected directly to the component in jacks (red/white). I'm using the unit to drive a pair of "vintage" JBL 2600s (89dB sensitivity according to spec). I try to have high quality conversions of audio, but still digital content. Note, the JBL 2600s have "min power" spec of 10W and I regarded that as an uncertainty. There are debates in audio forums about that, but to my ear, speaker sounds just fine driven by the A3, regardless of its 8.5W "output".

So I can report that the volume (with iMac at maybe 60% output and the A3 pretty much on full) is loud enough. This was difficult to ascertain from reading other posts, but the A3/JBL combo is loud enough without being deafening. I would say in a larger, more open area it would still be reasonable. I'll put it another way, it's way louder through the speakers than a level I'd want to listen to via headphones. It's nice having the details without having to crank way up.

I am pleased with the clarity provided. My initial audition tunes included Michael Hedges, The dB's, Flim & the BB's, Tycho/Sunrise Projector, Jeff Beck, Pearl Jam, Mindy Smith, and Albert Cummings. I am happy with the sound field put out by this combo. Very good separation. Of course, this music mix also has a range of dynamic range from the various productions. But the Jeff Beck and Michael Hedges through this amp/speaker especially make you happy to have another day above ground!

I wasn't sure how the performance would be with the JBLs, but along with the other reviews, I would say the A3 drives speakers nicely. I haven't tried the headphone mode yet (no switcher and am enjoying listening to the speakers too much which is really why I purchased it). Also, the A3 would enable connection of a subwoofer to it, but I'm not interested in that.

Also, the original purchaser had already rolled the tubes (GEs I think) - he sent the original tubes, but I have no interest in comparing them personally. He indicated that, while the original tubes were OK, the upgraded tubes made a meaningful further improvement.

I'll also mention that I have a nice set of bi-wired cables, but of course, no bi-wire outputs on the A3. Still, fine. Terminals on the A3 were very snug on this unit.

Vocals, acoustic instruments sound amazing. Bass instruments, synthesizer, and guitars sound warm/full. Am hearing new details in many songs I've listened to for quite some time (and am very familiar with), which is encouraging. (George Harrison "Isn't it a Pity" playing now...)

If it matters to you, the unit has been on for a few hours and is only lukewarm to touch (the metal portion of the body) - nothing like a laptop!

My personal references have been a Denon system in a media room, driving Energy C-300 front and some nice rear speakers (CB-20). I also have an SACD unit. I just wanted to go back to stereo and am glad I have. My only tube vs. transistor experience has been guitar amps (Peavey Deuce 4x6L6s vs. a small Fender and Marshall practice amps).

In summary: I'm happy with the Qinpu A3. I find the other reviews consistent with my own listening experience so far. I'm very happy to be into tubes at this level. I recommend this product.
