Winegard FL5500A FlatWave Amplified Razor Thin HDTV Indoor Antenna Review

We finally got an HDTV set this winter so I figured it's time to test out some of these indoor antennas and eventually cancel my basic cable which was $20 a month . My goal was to get major networks ABC, CBS, FOX, NBC and maybe some public TV stations. Basic cable wasn't giving me much more than that anyway. Aside from this, I wanted an indoor antenna that can be easily concealed (outdoor was out of question for me).

I live in Rochester MN and towers are about 35-40 miles away from my house. So since most indoor antennas claim about 35 miles range I am on the outer edge of their reception.

My quest for a perfect indoor antenna started at the local stores. I ended up buying 3 of them locally and every one had to go back because I wasn't able to get local NBC affiliate which is broadcasting on VHF . Even technical support at that station told me that at my distance (35 miles) I have to get an outdoor antenna. My UHF stations were coming in easy with any indoor antenna but that VHF was always elusive . In one of my last attempts to keep the cord cutting dream alive , I sent an e mail to Winegard's global sales representative Grant Whipple. He responded right away with some good news. Winegard was just about to release a new amplified indoor antenna that was showing some great results. At first I was little bit skeptical but decided to give it a shot.

I received this antenna 2 days later and tested it right away. I hooked it up and BINGO I finally got that NBC station along with ABC, CBS, FOX, CW (this one I wasn't able to get before as well), PBS and some more public channels. This antenna is paper thin, and it looks like a laminated piece of plastic. It comes with 18 feet long coaxial cable, and an amplifier. One I got is transparent but it also comes in white/black combination to blend in your decor. It can be put horizontally but for better results I recommend attaching it to the wall using couple of 3M stickers that come with it. My entertainment center is about 6 feet tall and my TV is on the upper level so I put the antenna on the wall behind the entertainment center about 6 feet up from the floor. So this way it stays hidden but its in a good position to receive signals. It helps to move the antenna around a little bit to find out where it gets the most channels before you attach it for good, but this unit is so light and easy to move around. It can be attached to windows as well. FlatWave Amped Indor HDTV lets you connect the amplifier to the usb port on your TV so your amplifier turns off when the TV is off .

I am very satisfied with this unit and would highly recommend it. The thing that impressed me the most was its ability to get a VHF station at about 35 miles distance. As noted above none of the other antennas I tested was able to do this. Your investment in this antenna will pay off in 3-4 months depending how much you are paying for cable.

Portion of the money I save will go towards Netflix service - $7.99 a month.

So again, I highly recommend this product if you are looking to pick up over the air HDTV signal. Your reception will depend on landscape between you and the towers but this amplified unit worked great for me at about 35-40 miles away from the towers. Over the air signal is even better than cable, since cable has to compress it. Be ready to spend some time moving the antenna around until you find a perfect spot, small movements can make big difference. Costco will start selling this antenna as well, you can buy it through Winegard site or here on Amazon.

I think this is a good bargain. Hold my 40" Proscan LCD nicely (40 something pound).
It is not super heavy duty but strong enough for new larger LCD TVs
(you might want a heavy duty hanger for larger heavy plasma TVs)

1. You fist assemble the vertical bars then secure it to the wall.
2, You then attach the back plate and TV holding bar to your TV
(it even comes with spacer and many many screws for different type of VESA standard mount, nice!)
3. You then hang your TV to the mount (using the hooks on the top of the TV plate)
4. Slide your TV left or right to position you want
5. Adjust the tile angle with the built-in screw with handle (nice feature)
6. Screw down the 2 secure screws at the bottom of the mount so the TV will not accidentally pop-out.
7. Enjoy your TV.

This is really a good deal (Thirty something with shipping, very good deal).

BTW, the bubble level come in the mount is not mount properly. Use a good leveler instead.
This mount looks very much like the CheetaMount but cheaper.

Roku 2 XS 1080p Streaming Player refurbished with Free Digital Pavilion HDMI cable Review

I absolutely love the Roku, of which I bought multiple refurbished units. The audio and video quality are top notch. Highly recommended.

But I had a Dickens of a time getting the remotes to pair with the base units, so I thought I'd share what I've learned.

I kept trying to pull the batteries and push the pairing button, as shown in the little manual, but it wasn't working. Here's what finally worked on all my units.

Put the batteries into the remote FIRST, before you plug in the Roku base unit. Have the remote right next to the Roku base unit when you supply power to the base unit. The base unit will then properly search for, and find, the remote and pair with it during the boot-up process. I tried it every other way I could think of, but couldn't get the two to pair properly. This method did the trick. You'll know everything's correct when you stop seeing flashing lights on the remote.

Samsung UN55F6030 55-Inch 1080p 120Hz Slim LED HDTV

Samsung UN55FH6030 55-Inch 1080p 120Hz 3D LED HDTV Review

I have to admit that I've been completely blown away by how fast flat screen technology has evolved in the last few years.

Just 5 years ago, the smallest bezel TV I could find was a 52" Mitsubishi LCD; and, now I was able to purchase this 55" Samsung LED that looks small when hanging in the same cabinet - even with the 3" larger screen!

When I first set this TV up, I was initially impressed with the bright colors; but, there were 3 obvious problems:

- There was an almost unnoticeable 'glitch' that would occur fairly frequently. I tried to tell myself I was just being picky; but, it happened often enough to be irritating.

- The picture was absolutely crystal clear (like looking out a window) - but the colors made everything look like a soap opera. (At least, that's what I thought of.)

- The picture looked great when the room was bright; but, it got a hazy/grey look when the room was dark.

I started playing with the settings and lucked into a fix for the glitch pretty quickly. There's a setting called 'Auto Motion Plus' under 'Picture Options'. I played around with it for a bit and realized the glitch completely disappeared when this is set to 'Off'.

The problem with the 'soap opera' look was resolved by messing with the color settings; and, the most important change ended up being to reduce the brightness & LED backlight settings.

The haziness took a few days - and I almost reached a point where I was going to return the TV. Fortunately, that was also resolved by turning off the 'Eco Sensor'. The reason it took longer to find is because it isn't located under picture settings - instead, it's hidden in the 'System/Eco Solution' menu...

Anyway, I have to say that I'm 100% satisfied now - and absolutely blown away by the amazing picture quality! I was tempted to reduce this to a 4 star review because I think the settings I mentioned should probably be defaults for most people; but, I'm sure Samsung has their own reasons.

Overall, I would highly recommend this TV if you're looking for a great LED TV!

[*** UPDATE 8/10/2013 ***]

I've continued messing with the settings on this TV and have found that the Eco-Sensor actually can be a nice feature. Instead of turning it off, I started using the 'Minimum Brightness' sub-setting that forces the TV to stay above a specific brightness level.

When the room was at it's darkest level (which is how it normally is when watching movies), I set the minimum brightness level on the Eco-Sensor so it looks good. The great thing about that is the picture is now bright enough during the day and doesn't get the 'hazy' look at night.

Anyway, I figured I would throw that one additional tip in here from my experimentation.

LG Electronics 50PN6500 50-Inch 1080p 600Hz Plasma HDTV (Black) Review

I learned reading reviews about TVs and trying to draw clear conclusions is like trying to find unobtainium. It also seems that in any ratings table, you may see about 5% to 15% of the ratings being 1 and 2 stars no matter what brand or model you are looking at. Then again, 67% of all statistics are made up on the spot.

Now here I am add adding one more to the many stories and opinions out there...

I paid the $649 price-tag on this TV and saved much $$$ over my initial choice of the Panasonic GT50 (and second choice a comparable new Samsung), and it turned out to be a good move. I already own a 42" Samsung 1080p plasma for a bedroom, and also have a 2007 42" Pioneer 720p plasma (remember those?) that still has a fantastic picture. I have this new LG TV for about a month now and it works flawlessly. I looked into this after coming across reviews of the LG PA6500 model. I used the calibration settings found on reviews here for the PA6500 and they worked well on the PN6500. I also bought the Disney WOW disk and that worked well too. The TV has a decent picture using factory pre-set Standard mode, but it was much improved by using the customizable Expert 1 (which also allows use of the built-in Picture Wizard) or Expert 2 modes. I actually used Expert 1 with PA6500 calibration settings and Expert 2 with Disney WOW created settings - couldn't really tell the difference in picture clarity, but there was a small difference in color.

I use the Panasonic DMP BDT220 Bluray player and it streams Netflix at 720p without any problems. It works so well I didn't need to use my Roku Netflix player anymore (now I have one less device cluttering up my TV area).
This TV shows Netflix HD at 720p really well. I sit 10ft away and the 50" seems the perfect size TV for me at this distance. Standard definition DVDs are upscaled well and the picture is sharp. Bluray shows a crisp picture. I watch mostly at night in a darkened room, but the TV shows well enough in the daytime with shades drawn closed.

Why did I consider this TV over the Samsung, Panasonic, or even a Sony (which I'm told makes Vizio too)?

1. Some reviews pointed out the panel lottery that Samsung and Panasonic (and some others) are engaged in. For example, you buy a Samsung and the panel may be made by Sharpe or some unfamiliar-named manufacturer. So reviews on Samsungs/Panasonics/Sonys are supposedly inconsistent because the corresponding panel is not identified. You can search out the other reviews for this info: the various manufacturer panel label codes have been identified. I was convinced enough not to want to chance getting a non-Samsung or non-Panasonic panel when I'm paying for one. Sony is supposed to be a nice set too but I think there is a large premium in the price due to name (like for Samsung and Pansonic too). It was stated LG does not play the panel lottery so all reviews are for the same LG panel - that makes the LG reviews more reliable to me.

2. Electronics engineers we've spoken with that are not affiliated with LG mentioned that LG has higher reliability than the other big names. In the store, I was checking out the LGs when the salesperson came over and steered me to the Panasonics saying how great they were, and the Panasonic he was showing me had severe pixel problems, which he stated was a good reason to buy the extended warrantees. How can a problem TV be a selling point for a 'great' TV?? So, I took a leap of faith that maybe the LG was of a more reliable quality.

3. I read reviews that my first choice Panasonic GT50 was really difficult to calibrate and that The Geek Squad has only a 50% success rate in dialing it in. I'm not paying hundreds of dollars for a coin-toss chance of having it calibrated properly. The Panasonic Viera TC-P50GT50 shown in Magnolia seemed dull and not that sharp of a picture for the money, and it was a dark room which is where plasma's are supposed to show best. Why go with a reportedly difficult to calibrate TV? And the reviews about Panasonic's burn-in problem? Those are plenty - no thanks.

4. If points # 1,2 and 3 above turn out to be bogus, I still have a great-picture and LG's 2 year panel warranty and 1 year parts-n-labor warranty to fall back on. Now that I see the picture quality is really nice, I could chance spending $649/yr for 2 or 3 years on replacement LGs and it would still be cost effective compared to the big name TVs. Do Samsung or Panasonic, or even Sony, really honor their warrantees? I read enough horror story reviews to be convinced they typically don't, or at least don't until after putting the really die-hard persistent 'valued-customers' through much hassle. And if LG is the same with warrantees, I'd rather be out $650 than $1800 or more. And there are enough bad reviews on Extended Warrantees to make those a gamble as well.

So far so good - I have a picture quality that I see is on par with the Samsung/Panasonic for about a third of the price. My Pioneer does show a great picture though, even for a 2007 720p model (used online calibration settings I got from CNET). Overall, the LG picture quality seems to be better than my Samsung plasma (I have a 40" Samsung 120Hz LCD in the basement, but I found I like plasmas the best because they show dark scenes better and also fast motion better). This is after calibrating both with Disney WOW, and even when using other online calibration settings for both the Samsung and LG the LG seems to show better.

Some (many?) reviews complain about the quality of LG and if my TV craps out or the pictures degrades anytime, I'll be back here for a humble update. And I will seek to get the TV fixed under warranty and if not successful I may even buy the same again to see if my luck changes. See, in the end this TV game is all about taking chances anyway, and for me the less costly chances are the better risk.
