The dynamo powered Eton Rover Multi-Function Tool is a super high quality do-it-all tool. Instead of scrambling for batteries grab this Eton Rover Multi-function tool and crank the dynamo for a powerful 3 LED flashlight as well as a variety of radio bands to keep you up to date with the latest information. Also with the TurboDyne cranking technology you can dump the charge in the Rover to your cell phone or other USB charged device. Other devices require you to connect to a device and crank to charge the other device. TurbDyno allows you to crank when you want and charge another device at a different time, more importantly it is also quicker/more efficient with transferring power to the receiving device so you can have the power you need much faster.Eton ROVER - American Red Cross Radio & LED Flashlight Review
I received this as a gift last year and I planned on using it for hiking/backpacking/camping. Let me break down the features:Crank Radio - It is a decent to average radio. You get multiple weatherband stations that come in very clear. The FM radio is about average, maybe a little less. I do however live in an area without many stations but the local stations do come in nicely. My daughter and I have gone on a couple hikes and we would stop at a bench, have a drink and turn on the radio and enjoy the view. The speaker volume is very nice and loud enough. It's dial tuning so you get whatever you can. The antenna fits inside the unit, you will basically get no reception with it still in.
LED Light - the 3 led lights are decent. Bright enough to see for multiple tasks. The rubberized button has the appearance of being waterproof but not sure.
USB Charger - I went on a one day/one night hike/camp last week and I used my phone as the radio. I downloaded my favorite sports talk radio podcast, 13 hours worth! By morning when I woke up the phone was almost dead and I still had about 4 hours of shows to listen too and the 1 hour hike back to the car. I plugged in the charger and ran the crank. It was making some funny electrical noises, like a high voltage transformer hum! After cranking fast an continuous for about 5 minutes with taking a couple short breaks it charged very fast. I can't speak on if that is good for my phone battery but it went from dead to 75% battery in 5 minutes.
I think this is a great item but a little overpriced, I'm glad to get it as a gift. Just a couple negatives to state. The overall integrity of the unit feels on the cheap side sometimes. The dial to select weatherband to FM seems very loose. It's aluminum, and very thick but just seems loose and free, I'm worried it's going to come off. I feel like the antenna is going to bend and then I'll never be able to get it back inside the unit and that would ruin it for hiking and going in my pack. The power on dial is the top one and I'm always accidentally turning it on. The hand crank is very heavy and thick aluminum but everything around it is plastic.
Nothing has broken on it yet, I haven't used it that much but I'm just worried. Maybe it's not necessary to worry and it will hold up. A solid 4 stars. If you have money to burn and want to use it for how I described then go ahead.
