I own this amplifier for about a year now.
It's very heavy. Watch your back.
It also runs VERY hot (even not talking about the tube).
After a few hours of operation, the coper plates and knobs can easily reach over 45 C.
It also smells hot.
If you have kids or pets, be very careful (this is true for all 845 based amplifier).
Now, what about the sound?
Out of the box, the unit sounds good but not more than good.
A burn-in time of a week stabilises the performances.
However, the stock tubes are clearly not revealing the potential of the amplifier.
I did the following changes:
- Chinese 12AX7 has been replaced by a 12AX7LPS from SOVTEK. I have tried many models and the LPS is the one that please me most in the new production.
- Shuguang 6SN7 has been replaced by a PHILIPS NOS 6SN7. The new EH 6SN7 are also very usable.
- Shuguang 845 has been replaced by Shuguang 845B (I insist on the B). The M (metal) version is not suitable and also does not sound good.
Feel free to experiment with other tubes / brands.

With these changes (and some burn-in time), the amplifier has reached another class of excellence.
The sound stage is very wide and deep. Very stable also.
No sibilance in the voices. No harsh sound, as one could expect but not overly warm. Pretty neutral, actually.
It also reveals many details in the recordings.
Deep, clean basses and superb trebles.
You can enjoy hours of listening without any fatigue.

Some technical comments:
The output power on 8 ohms load can reach 15Wrms (THD<1.4%, mainly H2). Above that, a solid compression appears and the THD rise quite fast with higher order harmonics appearing.
However, on a pair of home made speakers with an efficiency of 91dBSPL, 2 x 15Wrms is much more than necessary.
Another little annoying point: the 845 filament supply is rectified with "only" 10000uF filtering.
This is not the proper way to feed a 845 in a SET. If you listen to the speakers (mainly the tweeter), you can hear (at a very low level) the switching noise of the diode bridge.
A filament chock and additional filtering (15000uF min) would be necessary to tame this noise (measured to be 2mVrms).
On my 91 dBSPL speakers, this is clearly not an audible issue.
But on a 100dB+ system, it may become a problem.
Direct AC feed of the 845 could be much preferable in such high efficiency system.
Be EXTREMELY careful if you open the beast. The B+ voltage reaches 920V, enough to kill a bull !!!
This amplifier has still room for improvement. However, a DIY tweak is relatively difficult because there is not so much room left inside.

Despite these little technical drawbacks, the amplifier is very enjoyable and, I think, is really worse trying.
