Sony SAVAD900 Home Theater System Review

I have had this system for over 8 months now, and have compared it with similar systems, including BOSE, and I prefer this one. You really get a lot for the money. The system holds 5 DVD's, which is great, radio is great with plenty of presets. It is VERY loud and clear. Also, it decodes DTS, which, IMHO is AWESOME!!!! For example, compare Saving Private Ryan in DTS and DD, and you will long for DTS. The remote is a bit complicated, but once you get the hang of it, you will probably enjoy it, I know I did. The only thing I didn't realize was that I had the sub woofer mode off for the first few months, and wondered why the base was not that great! HAhahaha, what a difference. I have this system in my living room, (my wife is awesome), and the room is over 4000 cubic feet, with the viewing area 16 feet away from the CC and mains and sub, and I have never turned the volume up past 15 (I think it goes up to 30, I can't even imagine how loud that is). If you have a WEGA, it is a perfect match and will run everything on the remote. Btw, if you are as lucky as I am, and you have your PS2 hooked up to it, you will love the surround on the games, just switch to Game sound mode. Set-up is a breeze. Keep in mind this is NOT a "serious" home theater set-up, but then, you are not spending lots of money either. My suggestion is, always to try listen to whatever you are going to buy, because everyone's ear is different. Also, if you are going to spend as bunch of money on a speaker system, don't! Sell your DVD player, or save up some more money and buy this system. If you have a DVD player and a receiver, this is probably not the system for you, and you can get better speakers for a decent price. The only bummer about this system is that you don't have too much control when you are trying to balance out each speaker, (again, keep in mind that my living room is more than 30 feet long, so that is kind of important for me). Still, I love this system. Keep in mind what it is, and I think you will love it too!

Our only wish is that the universal remote was fully illuminated; the only the buttons that glow are the ones you're commanding at the moment.

The AVR 300's performance, however, is outstanding. Stereo recordings sound full and natural. This receiver offers a terrific sense of air with pinpoint placement of sonic images in the stereo sound field. Dynamics are well above average, thanks to Harman's High-Current Capability. High frequencies are silky smooth and the bass scores points for both definition and wallop.

Surround sources, whether Dolby Digital or DTS, are equally satisfying, enveloping you in a wide and seamless sonic environment that makes great surround-mixed music and movies much more compelling.

And if you've any reservations about the seemingly low 50-watt-per-channel power rating, surrender them now--the AVR 300's high-quality amplifier has power to spare, even with demanding source material.

It's very simple: if you want one of the best sounding, most generously endowed receivers on the market and are willing to pay just a bit more than the average, then Harman Kardon's AVR 300 must be in the running; the returns on your investment will be anything but average.

For me, this is one of those well spent "Once in a lifetime" Purchases. The unit does everything I ever wanted an A/V system to do, plus much more. EXAMPLE: With it's on-screen display system, I can delay the sound output of any specific speaker to the nano-second so that every speaker delivers sound to my ears at the exact same time. It's spectral range goes below and above what the human ear can detect and is incredibly sharp on both ends, thanks to the reserve amps. From the rumble of a 747 take-off, to the high-pitched chirp of a bird in a surround speaker. Add to this no audible hiss or distortion at all, even at peak volumes. This unit also actually switches all of your Audio AND video feeds together with either coax, s-video, digital, or fiber cable inputs and outputs. This feature truly eliminates multiple remote controls for ALL of your other A/V components. After all of this techno-babble, the instructions were very clear and the unit was fairly easy to set up. It did take me a few hours, but the time spent was well worth it. This unit was built with top notch quality. You will probably never have to (or want to) purchase another reciever.

Pure Resonance Audio 825W-GS Ceiling Speaker 25 Watt 8 Ohms 8 Inch Coax, Grille Mounting Screws Review

This speaker was the best match I could find for the money for my 30 x 40 classroom/studio application. The 8 ohm/25 watt rating of the speaker was a good match for the existing amp I was using. The attached 70v transformer was not used for this application. The speaker and grille was packed VERY well and arrived in pristine condition. I was surprised that a suspended ceiling mounting plate was included in the packaging. That saved me cutting out a piece of plywood to support the speaker on the suspended ceiling tile and a subsequent battle with the fire marshal about the piece of wood up there. It also made a great template for cutting the ceiling tiles and locating holes to mount the grille/tile/plate/speaker sandwich. My only regret was overlooking the need for an acoustically insulated top hat for the back of the speaker. Without one, the reflection from the backside of the speaker cone filled the cavity between the suspended ceiling and the roof. The nearby call center was not amused with the event. This was remedied with a metal painter's bucket wrapped with insulation.

I'm no audiophile but these speakers were a great buy and seem to do the trick for me. I purchased them to create a "surround like" sound for my media room. A 100 year old house and plaster walls prevented me from going full surround but these do a nice job creating rich sound for movies and music.
