Sony Dock Speaker for Walkman / AC100-240V 50/60Hz, Cigar Socket 12DC / RDP-NWV500 D, Orange Review

My car's stereo does not have an input jack for my Walkman. I was aware of Sony's Sound Mug being available in Japan, and I had been researching it. I decided to take the plunge and order it when it became available on Amazon. There is limited online information for this item (besides Sony's own marketing info), so I will share my experience and thoughts on this for you now:

First off, the product description for this is incorrect. The RDP-NWV500 is not a wireless speaker, and it does not require a Walkman that uses Bluetooth. The only thing wireless included with this is the remote control. A cable comes with this speaker to connect to it as well as your Walkman's WM-PORT. Sony does have a wireless version of a similar device, but that model is the RDP-NWV600B; not this one. The speaker also has an additional mini input jack for line-in audio. Additional devices may be connected to the speaker with this second input jack.

This speaker was designed for use in automobiles or other locations with its included dock. Sony's marketing video for the product states that the unit has UV protection on its finish. However, the included remote control states to not leave it in direct sunlight. I recommend using this in cars only. If you need a speaker dock for your Walkman, Sony SRSNWGU50 Walkman Speaker Dock - Black may be a better choice. I also own the SRSNWGU50, and I prefer its sound.

This is a single two-way speaker, so the sound output is not stereo. The speaker sound quality is adequate but nothing spectacular. It does have sufficient power for loudness. The speaker is light with bass, but you can hear it. I often find myself increasing the volume to make the bass louder.

The speaker comes with all cabling needed to connect to either your car's 12V DC socket or a USA non-polarized AC outlet. The AC plug was actually intended for a Japanese outlet, but it fits and works in a USA outlet. AC/DC converter handles world-wide voltages. It also comes with a square shaped cloth that is intended to hold the speaker in your car's cup holder. Note that when I do use this cloth, the speaker still manages to slide out of my cup holder when I make some turns. During sharp turns, I have to hold the speaker to stop it from falling out of the cup holder.

The only thing missing from the package is a case for it. I think Sony should have bundled a case in the box, because carrying it, cables, the remote, the cup holder cloth cushion for it is a pain.

Addition: after a full day's use of this, there is one more thing this speaker is missing (this is a design flaw, in my opinion):

I can only do the following three things directly on the speaker:

1) power the unit on or off
2) increase or decrease the volume
3) select the input

I have absolutely no way to play or pause the Walkman from the speaker itself. I think it needs a play/pause button added to it, and this can be done with no issue (just add an extra button on the top for play/pause). The remote control has a play/pause button as well as several more controls for the attached Walkman, so the speaker itself should at a minimum have a play/pause button.

Here is why this is needed: when I power on my vehicle, the speaker starts in a powered on state when connected to my car's power outlet. However, the Walkman does not play. It is in a paused state. To actually play music, I have to either press play on the Walkman or press the play button on the remote control of the speaker. The remote control is a pain to use when driving, and I easily control the volume of the speaker by rotating the top of it.

If I stop at a gas station, I turn the ignition off but set it to ACC so that the speaker and Walkman continue to play music as I get gas. The music continues without missing a beat, which is a nice feature. However, when I start the car, the speaker remains powered on, but the Walkman gets into a paused state. I have to again press the play button on the Walkman or use the remote control to resume playing music.

I wish the designers had added a play/pause button on the top of the unit. There is space for one across from the input button.

One last note:

Some music I play through this speaker sounds pretty good, but other types of music sounds as if the speaker is being choked. By that I mean that the output sounds congested and difficult to hear the sounds. My guess is that this has something to do with the digital amplifier of this unit not working so good for some types of music. I have only encountered about two songs so far where I had noticed this behavior (out of 7,458 songs stored on my Walkman).
