Product Description

Talk about a lot of bang for the buck--KLH's AV5001 floorstanding speaker provides just that with a 12-inch woofer and a 12-inch passive radiator for deep, powerful bass. For the remainder of the frequency range, KLH uses a 5.25-inch liquid-cooled midrange cone and a 1-inch liquid-cooled dome tweeter. And because the AV5001 has high sensitivity, you can drive it to ear-crunching indoor levels with just about any amplifier.

The AV5001, which comes in a black-ash vinyl veneer, is relatively large and designed to sit directly on the floor. (You may want to consider wedging rubber feet or cones under the AV5001 in order to keep all of that bass energy from resonating through your floorboards instead of radiating into your room.) As far as hooking up the AV5001, we weren't crazy about the spring-loaded wire-clip terminals. Five-way binding posts would be more rugged and convenient. Otherwise, the AV5001 appears to be a solidly made speaker.

Sonically, it may not be the last word in subtlety and nuance, especially for jazz and classical fans. But then, refinement is the last thing needed for some music. If you love to hear a Marshall stack churning waves of thrashing guitar notes, or a kick drum delivered with the room-rattling power of a crashing safe, or pants-flapping drum and bass, then the AV5001 will have you on your feet and dancing. In addition, vocals sound clear and strong, and the top end has plenty of shimmer and zing. Overall, the AV5001 is a clean and powerful speaker.

No one speaker can satisfy everybody, and KLH's AV5001 probably won't get your juices flowing if you're into classical or acoustic music. But if you like hard-hitting music that's rich in bass and treble, the AV5001 will make it come alive. --Wayne Garcia

Pros:

  • Powerful, dynamic bass
  • Easy to drive
  • Plays loud without strain

Cons:

  • Bass can be overpowering
  • Clip-type speaker terminals require bare-wire cable

KLH AV5001 Floor-Standing Speaker Review

PastMy old setup consisted of a Sony 120 watt amp. Sony 10 disc changer, and two KLH AV5001 speakers. They were primarily played in a 18' by 12' bedroom located in the basement of the house. I bought these speakers when I was 16 years old back in 1993. Being raised by liberal parents, I listened to my music very loud and once tested the SPL of the speakers at 123db without distortion. I may have been able to go further but I physically could not handle the loudness. I used the KLH AV5001 as the sole pair of speakers at many high school dances--it required an additional amplifier than the Sony amp stated above to avoid amplifier clipping--but the sound performance was superb. The room directly above my old bedroom no longer has any paint on any of the sheet rock nails because the bass from the speakers vibrated the paint off them. My claim to fame: I once took my hold stereo system outside and when I cranked it up the sound could be heard 2 miles away--no exageration. Yes, I lived in a very rural area in a town with a population of only 800 people.PresentI currently have a Sony 935 receiver. I have added a Definitive Sub for use with the LFE output use only for DVDs. I have a Sony 535 DVD player and the same Sony 10 Disc Changer.I still use my KLH AV5001 speakers as my front channel speakers. Whenever their is a wedding I still use my AV5001 speakers to do the trick for me. I paid $500 dollars after my old neighbor started to take me to court for vibrating their China set off of their hutch. (My new claim to fame--yeah I am proud of it!)FutureI plan on buying another speaker for my center channel by the end of the month. I will order the other two by the end of next month. This will round out my surround system.DrawbacksFirst off, if you move the speakers as often as you change your underwear, then after about 5 years the front grills begin to fall off. Secondly you aren't able to spend as much money for them so you will not get as much respect from stupid 'audiophiles' that spend $1,000 per speaker to gain a nominal performance increase. The last drawback to the AV5001 is that more of your neighbors will be able to afford good sounding speakers and you may be the one in danger of loosing your China set. Ha HaBuy them! I did (at $350/pair 7 years ago) and I still feel they deliver the most bang for your buck.Feel free to email with any questions you may have about them.
