JVC RX-6030VBK Receiver Review

JVC is known for their reputation of providing excellent audio/video equipment with good reliability and affordable prices. This reciever is a great example of that fact. First, there is the audio. It connects to a five-channel speaker system to provide the best home theatre experience one can create without being a millionaire. There are all kinds of different sound modes and controls you can use so you can fine-tune and customize whatever it is you want to hear. My favorite(and probably most popular) is the DSP mode. It allows you to re-create a sound "situation" such as what might be similar if heard in a live-club or large auditorium. There is also "digital decompression" which you can use at night to add to the surround effect when music is turned down. An optical digital cable should be used to get the best out of whatever your listening to(or watching) and, unfortunately, radio signals can only be reproduced with analog input. But CDs sound great and the Dolby Pro Logic II is a great feature especially when using the "wraparound" adjustment. On the down side, however, the bass boost is a little bit thin and I'm not sure about the reciever's relationship with my subwoofer.On the DVD/video side of things you can cleary see that this is what the reciever is geared towards. When you look at the back of the unit you'll notice all the various jacks for TV, VCR, and DVD. It's pretty extensive, mostly because of all the different ways you can set up the connections. There are even other ports you can use to enhance the picture that's produced by the VCR or DVD player, but a coaxial digital cable is required.Another great thing about the unit is the remote. It really simplifies the operation of all the equipment. You just choose which source you want playback from and your there. Even without the Compulink the remote can still control most items on other JVC sources. From the remote you can also do speaker test and adjust speaker settings, flip from digital to analog output, and choose which sound format you want to hear. But the one thing I found the most dissapointing is that the Comulink III jack doesn't work, it's totally not compatible. So I can't get automatic source selection or power-off. But even then I don't really care that much because the remote does so much by itself. Anyway, this is a great reciever at a great price. For anyone who's serious about building a serious home entertainment system, they definitely should give this thing a look. Durabrand Under Counter Cd Clock Radio W375-k Review

I received this as a gift to feed my NPR addiction and I am plesantly suprised. Since I had been looking at the high-end under-the-cabinet radios, I was a little skeptical since this is the cheapest one on the market. It was super easy to install (less than 10 minutes) and program. The best part is that because it has an external antenna so all of the radio stations are crystal clear. The cd player is fine, I have only used it a few time. The unit controls are clearly marked and easy to use. The remote control works and controls are clearly marked and easy to use. Don't let the price (from Wal-Mart - under $40) fool you, this is a good product.

Philips Mx3600d Home Theater System Review

I purchased the MX3700D after Christmas 2002 and have been very happy with this system for the price. It is my first DVD player and first experience with home theater. The surround system adds a whole new dimension to the viewing experience. I have a small to medium size room for my "home theater" and this model fills the room with sound very well. The MX3700D comes with a 100W powered sub and even with the volume at half power it rattles the whole house. I also recently purchased a Philips 27PS55S 27" TV with the component video inputs. I am happy with the combination. The remote is fairly easy and straightforward to use though I'm considering buying a single programmable remote to run everything. My only complaint is the same as a few other comments I've seen here and that is an occasional glitch on the screen during playback. I dont know if this is due to scratches/dirt on rented DVD's or if it is partly the player. Even brand new/clean DVD's seem to have an occasional glitch. These glitches last only a fraction of a second but are still visible. So far the problem is small enough to not be annoying. The player has a wealth of features and can play decode all the popular audio formats. I was missing the benefits of DTS untill just recently. (You have to select the proper audio track before you play the movie on DTS enabled DVD's)(If you are new to DVD's and are considering buying your first DVD player spend at least enough to get a "home theater in a box" type system. Buying a DVD player and just hooking it to your TV doesn't begin to let you enjoy the added features of DVD.)I'm hooked on home theater and if and when I move to a larger house I plan to dedicate a room to a larger home theater. I'm certain that some time in the future I would like to upgrade to a fancier component system but for now the Philips MX3700D fits the bill nicely. (also don't forget to get the free surround speaker stands from Philips. Their website has a form to mail in.)
